Photo Exhibition: Parisian Life
In the early part of the 20th century, the Albrecht House on Kapitulska Street in old town Bratislava, Slovakia was an open house where musicians and other types of artists would gather. It was a beacon of light during the darker days of communism. For the last 15 years, my friend, Igor Valentovič, has worked tirelessly to bring the house back from little more than rubble to a gathering place for all forms of art.
It was in this spirit that Igor introduced the night as the first of a multi-disciplinary gathering harkening back to the days of Hans Albrecht. In the theme of a celebration of French culture, the evening was introduced with a short piano piece by the French composer Ravel. Afterwards, I spoke about my photos lining the walls of the music venue. I am so proud to be the photographer displayed in this inaugural event. It was a perfect evening of good friends, music, artists, and photographs. It ended with friends gathered around the piano for a wine-fueled singalong. It was a night I will never forget.
The exhibition, Parisian Life, will run through mid-October and is open prior to events at the Albrecht House. A special thanks to the Albrecht Forum, and my dear friends Igor and Vlasta for hosting the event and providing all the wine and food.

Introduction from Igor
Photo Exhibition at the Albrecht House in Bratislava, Slovakia
I am so pleased to have been selected by the Albrecht Forum for the first photo exhibition held at the Albrecht House, a solo exhibition of my photos of Parisian life made over the past 15 years.
Igor and Vlasta Valentovič are the tireless force who have led the Albrecht House renovation for more than a decade. I first met them fourteen years ago when the house was in shambles, and their vision seemed a long shot. Since then, they, their children, and this city have become very special to me.
Today, I’m thrilled to see this project nearing conclusion with the creation of a wonderful garden and an incredible center for music and cultural events in Bratislava. I hope to enjoy the programs here for years to come.

A Classical Documentary
I took Otto’s online workshop in 2016 while I was in Courtmacsherry, Ireland. I appreciated his detailed and thoughtful feedback. And I enjoyed this blog post he wrote about my documentary on life in a Irish village. Check it out!
It’s time to present another of the participant’s work from last year’s online workshop. Pat Callahan made a classical, visual documentary story for his personal photo project when participating in the online workshop «Finding Your Photographic Voice» last year. And he did it with conviction and through a entrancing narration. In his portrayal of the Irish village Courtmacsherry, Pat captures the daily life of its villagers, whether kids and youngsters having fun in the harbour, a quiet moment of in the local pub, a burial or the bliss of a wedding.
The strength of Pat’s visual portrayal of Courtmacsherry is his well-developed talent both to perceive good composition and finding those smaller or bigger moments that bring the story together. He is a master of the decisive moment as articulated by Henri Cartier-Bresson. His eye is sharp and his technical skills foster the stories each of the photos tells so…

Strand Races at Coutmacsherry, Ireland
Every July, on that date when the tide is at its lowest during the mid-afternoon, a horse race is held on Courtmacsherry Bay. It’s aptly called the Strand Races.
This year, a ten-year-old won the first race. As the day progressed, the jockeys were older, but never past their teen years. Still, each whippet-thin boy was required to weigh in with their saddle.
The crowd gathered to place bets and eat chips sold from the Fry Truck.
This year it rained most of the day which made an always muddy event a bit worse. Save for those boys who didn’t make the winner’s circle, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
